About Blocks 4 Growth & Step Up
Blocks 4 Growth and Step Up are quality early childhood development programmes developed to promote holistic growth within 4 to 5 year and 5 to 6 year old children respectively to better prepare them for formal schooling.
Blocks 4 Growth
Age 4-5 Years
Step Up
Age 5-6 Years
The Step Up programme builds on Blocks 4 Growth in promoting holistic early childhood development in children aged 5 to 6 years, to ensure a smooth transition from Grade R to Grade 1.
The Programmes Aim To:
- PHelp children from disadvantaged communities transition smoothly from the early learning environment to formal schooling, enabling them to progress from being developmentally at risk to being on par with their peers.
- PImprove academic performance from the foundation phase and beyond.
- PMinimise school drop-out rates and the associated social and economic consequences.
- PEquip caregivers with the parenting skills they need to maximise their children’s development.
- PEmpower ECD practitioners with the knowledge, competencies and skills to promote holistic child development successfully.
This tried and tested programme was developed by a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists. It is grounded in research and best practice.
We focus on enriching the lives of all our beneficiaries by offering support, developing their strengths, transferring skills and changing the culture of education in the crèche, home and community at large.
The programme has three target areas namely the children, practitioners and parents.
Children
- PGross-motor development , including balance, crossing the midline, ball skills, hopping, skipping and core stability.
- PFine-motor development , including pencil grip and control, fine motor coordination, drawing, cutting and writing.
- PLanguage development, including vocabulary expansion, receptive and expressive language, phonological awareness and literacy skills.
- PEmotional development, including confidence, sense of identity, self-awareness, self-regulation and mindfulness.
- PCognitive development, including reasoning, problem solving, planning, task initiation, concentration, impulse control and visual perception.
Children who have been identified with severe developmental delays, psycho-social or medical concerns are referred to relevant government or non-profit organisations within the community for specialised and appropriate treatment. This ensures early intervention and changes the trajectory of a children’s life.
Parents
We encourage parents at the early childhood development (ECD) centres we work with to be actively involved in the development of their child.
Homework tasks are sent home after each group session, motivating parents to practice certain skills at home with their child. This promotes parent engagement and provides an opportunity to transfer knowledge and key learning skills to parents. Parents and the therapist can also communicate directly and regularly with each other through the homework book, as well as through WhatsApp support groups.
Parents and caregivers of all children participating in Blocks 4 Growth and Step Up are invited to observe a therapy session twice a year.
This provides them with the opportunity to observe the therapist in action and gain insight into their children’s behavior and performance. They also learn, first-hand, how to engage effectively with their children.
Furthermore, our therapists attend two meetings at the ECD centres to equip parents and caregivers of children aged 4 to 5 years and 5 to 6 years respectively with the necessary skills to stimulate their children through play at home.
Stimulation packs are also distributed four times a year to encourage learning during the school holidays. These packs include an activity book, a reading book, a parent wellness book, as well as an assortment of items such as a ball, puzzle, a pair of scissors, crayons and finger paint, to name but a few. Each of these four packs are unique and contain different items.

Practitioners
Practitioners attend weekly coaching sessions with a therapist, learning techniques and skills that promote a healthy learning environment.
Practitioners receive practical activities, and the therapist educates and guides them on the skills targeted by each activity. Each practitioner session is aimed at reinforcing the skills learnt during the therapy group and will expose additional learners in the classroom to therapeutic input.
A platform is also created for the practitioner to receive guidance and advice from a therapist about specific child-related concerns or difficulties they are facing in the classroom. Practitioners are upskilled and empowered to ensure effective teaching methods, with empathy and knowledge of the children’s specific, individual needs.
The mentoring of practitioners is fundamental to the success and sustainability of the programme, as the practitioners are key to reinforcing the gains the children make during group sessions in the classroom. Our therapists assist our practitioners in establishing communication channels with parents and provide input to our team about any changes in specific children’s behaviour, performance and adherence to classroom routines.
Programme Development
We have proudly developed the programmes based on:
- QTherapists’ interaction with the children, in small groups, within their own learning environment
- PDirect contact and daily feedback from the children, parents and practitioners.
- PAppropriate activities according to the developmental stage and needs of learners.
The programme is:
- QDeveloped by a multi-disciplinary team of psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists
- PAligned with the national curriculum framework and developmental milestones
- PGraded according to group or individual needs
- PDeveloped to be cost-effective, sustainable and scalable
- PTried and tested and proven to significantly increase children’s developmental outcomes.
